At Clinica Medica Familiar our priority is to save lives by preventing and reducing the devastating effects of cancer through education, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention services. The Cancer Detection Program, Every Woman Counts offers a NO-COST, FREE clinical breast examination and breast cancer screening mammogram to all pre-enrolled women aged 40 and above. The program also offers a NO-COST, FREE pelvic exam and cervical cancer prevention screening exam for women age 21 and above, for those that qualify.
Breast Cancer Screening Information
Do you qualify for free services? You may if you:
- are 40 years old or older
- have low income
- have medical insurance that does not cover breast cancer screening
- have a high insurance deductible or co-payment
- are not getting these services through Medi-Cal or another government-sponsored program
- live in California
Cervical Cancer Prevention Information
Do you qualify for free services? You may if you:
- are 21 years old or older
- have low income have medical insurance that does not cover cervical cancer prevention screening
- have a high insurance deductible or co-payment
- are not getting these services through Medi-Cal or another government-sponsored program
- live in California
In California, the Cancer Detection Program, Every Woman Counts (EWC) assists low income, uninsured, underserved women in obtaining high quality breast and cervical cancer screening and follow-up services. The program is administered by the California Department of Health Care Services. EWC receives funding from:
- the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP)
- Proposition 99, one cent of a two-cent tax on tobacco products (mandated by the California Breast Cancer Act of 1993)
- general funds

Breast Cancer Facts and Statistics
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in U.S. women, excluding cancers of the skin. If the current rate stays the same, women born today have about a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer at some point during their lives. Although mortality rates have steadily decreased since 1990, breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths in U.S. women, exceeded only by lung cancer.
